Hicle
the award for the Hicle Hiking and Cycle Routes of the Year

Cyclists and hikers deserve high-quality routes, in our view. In order to encourage governments and other organizations to set out beautiful routes, we took the initiative for an annual election of the Hiking Route and Cycle Route of the Year.

Testing new routes

Every year, the members of the hiking jury and the cycling jury set out to test new or recently radically changed routes for themselves. In doing so, they pay attention to the route surface, signage, facilities, hindrance from other traffic, landscape, theme of the route, etc.

Only routes that are new or have recently undergone significant changes are eligible for the awards. An additional condition applies to the hiking routes: they must (partly) pass through the territory of the Netherlands, Belgium or the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

And the winner is…

The highlight of the election is of course the award ceremony. The hiking jury announces the results at the Fiets en Wandelbeurs in Belgium, the cycling jury does the same at the fair in the Netherlands.

FAQ Hicle Hiking and Cycle Route of the Year

What are the awards about?

The Hicle Route of the Year Awards recognize outstanding cycling and hiking routes. The awards aim to encourage destinations, public authorities and route developers to create and maintain high-quality routes for active travellers.

There are two awards:

– Hicle Cycle Route of the Year – for new or recently upgraded long-distance cycling routes in Europe.
– Hicle Hiking Route of the Year – for new or recently upgraded hiking routes in the Benelux.

An expert jury tests and evaluates the nominated routes and selects the winners.

Who organizes them?

The awards are organized by Hicle, the organization behind the Fiets en Wandelbeurs (Hike & Bike Experience), E-bike Challenge and other cycling and hiking initiatives. The winners are announced during the Fiets en Wandelbeurs in the Netherlands and Belgium.
